Dr Brian Senior commenced his professional career with the Commonwealth
Government, Bureau of Mineral Resources in reconnaissance and semi-detailed
geological mapping with extensive field experience in Queensland, Northern
Territory and South Australia.
He formed BR Senior & Associates in 1982 and undertook contract photogeology
and satellite imagery interpretation for Huntings (UK) Pty Ltd and Australian Photogeological Consultants Pty
Ltd. His specialist knowledge of the regolith (doctorate thesis) led to
new methods of photogeological mapping with emphasis on the identification
of alteration due to mineralization.
Recognition of the structural significance of topographically inverted
landforms in weathered profiles led to the identification of probable
hydrocarbon entrapment sites. He also developed a mapping system relevant
to the planning and execution of geochemical surveys. These studies contributed
to the discovery of several economic mineral and hydrocarbon discoveries
in Australia and overseas, including:
- Hartley platinum (Zimbabwe)
- Gold and base metals in regolith (Ghana, Australia, New Zealand, Sardinia)
- Wapulu epithermal gold (Papua New Guinea)
- Sapphire placers (Laos, Queensland, NSW)
- Tintaburra and Chandos hydrocarbon structures (Queensland)
- Heavy mineral placers (Western Australia, Victoria, NSW, Northern
Territory)
- Groundwater in the Great Artesian Basin (Queensland, NSW, South Australia,
Northern Territory)
- Uranium exploration (South Australia, Queensland)
